The brewery was founded in 1830 and is located near the Sea of Japan in the centre of Niigata Prefecture, where sake is brewed in a white-walled storehouse using water from the brewery's own well and good quality rice from the neighbourhood. The former Wajima village is where the monk Ryokan spent the last years of his life, and is home to his grave and the Ryokan Museum, where his calligraphy is on display. The name "Shingetsurin" was registered as a trademark in Ryokan's handwriting. It is a fragrant, light, dry, smooth and full-flavoured sake.
