Introduction to the brewery
Yonezuru Brewery is located in Takahata-cho, Higashi Oshi-gun, in the southern part of Yamagata Prefecture, and was founded in 1697 (Genroku 10), serving as an official sake brewery of the Yonezawa-Uesugi clan during the Edo period.
The brand name Yonekaku has two meanings: it is a sake that conveys gratitude, referring to the abundant harvest of rice and the crane's standing posture, which can be compared to a bowing figure; and it is a congratulatory and auspicious sake with 88 cranes flying in a spreading pattern.
Product description.
This dry sake from Yonekaku features a picture of the sake-loving yokai Kappa.
The artist of the picture is the Japanese painter Ogawa Imosen (1868-1938), known as 'Kappa no Usen'. After the 11th head of Yonekaku took over the reigns of the family in 1955 at the young age of 23, he studied sake brewing under Dr Chikayoshi Ogawa, who isolated Association 10 yeast. Through this connection, permission was granted to use a painting by Dr Ogawa's father, the painter Imosen, as the sake label, and sales of Yonekuru Kappa began in the 1960s.
