The company was founded in the late Edo period (1854-60) as a navy blue shop on the present site and later started a brewing business. The red-brick warehouse built in the Taisho era (1922) has been designated a Tangible Cultural Property of Japan. The sake of the Takahashi Brewery is not overly dry, but has a full, gentle flavour, without being 'light and dry', which is a characteristic of Niigata sake.
Choryo" is an ancient name for the region of Echigo Nagaoka.
In the past, people called the land of Nagaoka 'Choryo'. Choryo Sennenju is a quiet, strong honjozo, formerly a first-class sake. It is a mellow sake, different from Niigata Tanrei Dry Sake.
